The Pieter Smit Bridge, an iconic connection in Oldambt

Written by:

The Pieter Smit Bridge is one of the most striking landmarks in the Oldambt region. This nearly 800-meter-long bicycle and pedestrian bridge connects Winschoten directly with Lake Oldambt and the Blauwestad recreation area. With a width of 3.5 meters, the bridge spans the Winschoterdiep, the A7 motorway, nature reserves, and water. Upon its opening in 2021, the bridge was even considered the longest bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Europe.

The bridge is named after Pieter Smit (1963–2018), former mayor of the municipality of Oldambt. Smit was beloved in the region for his involvement with residents and local events. His name lives on in this iconic bridge, a true connection between city, nature, and recreation.
